Freshwater Impoundments

In the past few years the popularity of fishing freshwater has grown enormously with an increasing number of tournaments being held throughout Queensland and Australia, based solely around the Australian Bass. Our local impoundments are no different, providing excellent sport fishing opportunities.

Baroon Pocket Dam

Baroon pocket is a relatively small, but deep water storage located on Obi Obi Creek close to the town of Montville. Baroon Pocket is stocked with Australian bass, golden perch and Mary River cod, and you can catch other endemic species such as freshwater jew and spangled perch.

Borumba Dam

Borumba Dam is a little further north from the coast than the other dams mentioned here, but it’s worth a mention because of its exceptional angling and recreational facilities. Borumba is located near the hinterland town of Imbil. It is stocked with Australian bass, golden perch, Mary River cod, silver perch and saratoga. This dam is renowned for its saratoga fishing with specimens in excess of 100cm in length. Saratoga is one of the best freshwater sport fish on the planet, jumping and fighting hard.

Ewen Maddock Dam

The Ewen Maddock Dam is located in the Mooloolah shire and is a short drive from anywhere on the coast. It is on the road heading south to the small town of Beerwah. The dam is relatively small and shallow but is stocked with Australian bass and saratoga. It also has natural populations of spangled perch and freshwater jew.

Lake MacDonald

Lake MacDonald, or the Six Mile Creek Dam, is located near the town of Cooroy not far from Noosa. The dam is stocked with Australian bass, golden perch, Mary River cod, saratoga and silver perch. This picturesque dam is renowned for its population of the endangered Mary River cod. These fish should not be targeted or removed because of their threatened status.
