Common Marlin Rigs

Single hook lure rig (light tackle)

Materials: 1.5m of 150lb monofilament leader, 2 crimps to suit the leader, suitable j hook (not offset – tarpon style).

1)     Crimp the mono at one end to form an eye.
2)     Insert the tag end of the line through the head of the lure so it passes from the end of the head to the skirted side.
3)     Slide the other crimp onto the tag end. Do not crimp it yet.
4)     Insert the tag end through the eye of the hook and twist the tag end up the mono. Once the desired length is reached, place the tag end through the crimp you placed on the tag end earlier and crimp accordingly. The number of twists you do will depend on how far you want the hook to protrude out of the bottom of the skirt in its normal running position.

Live Bait Rig

Materials: 1.5m 100lb monofilament leader, 2 crimps to suit leader, suitable circle hook, rubber band, open-eyed bait needle.

1)     Crimp the mono at one end to form an eye and crimp the hook to the other end.
2)     Place the bait needle halfway through the very top section of the fish’s eye socket.
3)     Insert a rubber band into the slot of the bait needle.
4)     Pull the rubber band through the fish’s head with the needle until half of the rubber band is on each side of the fish’s head.
5)     There will be a loop of rubber band on either side of the fish’s head. Take the point of the hook and pass it through both of those loops. Twist the hook about 2-3 times (the rubber will twist with it).
6)     A loop is then created between the top of the fish’s head and the bottom end of the twisted rubber band.
7)     Place the point of the hook back through that second loop so the pointy or barb end of the hook is facing the sky and the eye of the hook is pointing back to the trace/rod tip.
